Sri Lanka is an island in South Asia located about 32 Km off the southern cost of India. It has many nicknames Serendib, Island of Dharma, Ceylon, Resplendent Isle, Pearl of the Orient, Heladiva. This colorful collection of nick names will tell anyone the beauty of this island.
Sri Lanka is a tourist's paradise. Marco Polo described it as "the finest island of its size in the world". Wonderful pristine beaches, lush-green hills, majestic waterfalls, corals, wild life, heritage sites, pilgrimage sites, exotic cuisine-Sri Lanka has everything that a tourist can imagine. It has something to offer to everyone.
Though Colombo is widely known as the capital of Sri Lanka but strictly speaking Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte-a miniature town in Colombo-is the legislative capital of Sri Lanka. Colombo is the commercial capital of Sri Lanka.
The total population of Sri Lanka is around 20 Million. Major ethnic groups include: Sinhalese (74%), Tamil (18%), Moor (7%), Burgher, Malay and Vedda (1%). Buddhism is the major religion followed by around 70% of the population. Other major religions are Hinduism (15%), Christianity (8%) and Islam (7%).

Over the centuries, Sri Lanka has been describe as a tropical paradise. This is hardly surprising, as it has everything – sun, sea, sandy beaches, cool mountains, ancient lakes, forests, teeming with wildlife, precious stones, magnificent archaeological sites and above all friendly well-educated people. Combine this with a good tourist infrastructure and it is not hard to see why it is such a popular tropical island destination.

Physically, Sri Lanka is a teardrop- shaped island in the Indian Ocean, separated from the Indian peninsula by the Gulf of Manner and the Palk Strait. It measures 432km from north to south and 224km from east to west. Fine sandy beaches can be found around almost the entire coast, although it is the strip from the west coast to the south, with its sandy bays and delightful coves, that is the most heavily developed for tourism. The resorts at Negombo to the north of Colombo and those to the south at Bentota and Beruwela are magnets for beach lovers and water sports enthusiasts. Further south are Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa beaches, which are ideal for snorkeling and diving, where swimmers can the ocean with are ideal for snorkeling and diving, where swimmers can share the ocean with turtles. |
